A day for the Earth.

Did you know that today, April 22nd, we celebrate Earth Day?

Did you know that today, April 22nd, we celebrate Earth Day? Now that you do, what are you doing to help?

You have surely read recommendations in books, articles, magazines, social media, and other outlets about how to take care of the planet and how exposed we currently are to climate change.

But today is another reminder to reflect on how our actions impact the environment, and no matter how small our contributions may be, we shouldn't forget to make them every day as a way of thanking the Earth for everything it gives us.

We know that the goal today is to take care of the planet and, above all, to integrate more individual and collective activities to prevent climate change. Here are a few you can start considering and implementing in your daily life.

  • Reduce energy consumption in your home.
  • Reuse materials and reduce your consumption of single-use products.
  • Reduce your red meat consumption.
  • Make use of renewable energy.
  • Reforest and conserve our forests.

Trees and plants absorb carbon dioxide, which helps us reduce carbon emissions, and by supporting reforestation programs, you are contributing to the conservation of biodiversity. At Barrio Méxicowe are nature lovers. In our houses, you can find different types of plants that help create a more pleasant and harmonious space for your stay; they are responsible for adding that environmental vibe that is also decorative, which we love.

If you have stayed with us or are familiar with our houses, you have surely spent time in the beautiful patios we have at both Casa Morelos orCasa Kali filled with plants around the pool. How about that Greek-style hallway with benches and climbing ivy all around, perfect for enjoying the sun in the morning or reading outdoors at Casa Blanco—it’s a delight. Or, if cacti are more your thing, you'll have to stop by and discover which of our houses has them.

But for now, we’ll leave you with a list of some very easy-to-care-for plants for both indoors and outdoors, along with some maintenance tips that will help improve your life, your environment, and your decor.

Split-leaf Philodendron:

This plant is a favorite due to its large leaves, with an intense green color and a shine that makes them look spectacular wherever they are placed. It is very hardy and can live perfectly outdoors, provided it is protected from direct sunlight, whether in a pot or planted directly in the ground.

If you decide to keep it indoors, it is recommended that it has good sunlight so it can adapt to the space. During hot weather, you should water it three to four times a week, ensuring the soil stays moist as much as possible, and reduce watering during cold weather.

Ferns:

They are popular for indoor home decor. With over 1,000 different species in Mexico alone, they are among the most common plants, as they are easy to care for indoors throughout all four seasons. If this plant doesn't survive under your care, you’re probably not cut out for it.

They generally prefer shade and small doses of indirect light. It is important to keep them in temperatures around 68°F (20°C). They need humidity to thrive, so we recommend watering them every two days. Another important tip: ferns usually require nutrients at least once a month for growth.

Organ Pipe Cactus:

Cacti are household favorites because they are hardy and require less care compared to other plants. They are part of the succulent family and make beautiful decorations for both indoor spaces and outdoor gardens.

They can withstand high temperatures due to their ability to store water overnight in their small leaves and stems, which is why they don't require much water for daily care and maintenance. Watering should be moderate, as they don't need much to survive. It is recommended to water them only when the soil is completely dry, though during hot weather, you can water them once or twice a week to keep them at a comfortable temperature.

English Ivy:

This is one of the most beautiful and common plants for home decor in gardens or patios. Ideally, place it in a space with plenty of natural light, though you should keep it away from direct sunlight, heat sources, air conditioning, and drafts.

‍For watering, it is best to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, as excess water can drown the plant. Avoid overwatering; you can water it twice a day during hot weather and once during colder periods.

Peace Lily:

This plant is perfect for both indoor and outdoor spaces. Outdoors, it prefers bright, indirect light, while indoors it thrives in partial shade or shade. Never expose it to direct sunlight, as it doesn't like that at all.

You can place it on a covered terrace with a warm climate and plenty of indirect light, or if you keep it indoors, make sure to place it near a window for proper ventilation. Regarding watering, check that the soil is dry before watering, and do so every 5 to 7 days.

Pothos:

This plant is ideal for spaces or corners with natural light, or humid areas like your bathroom, provided there is a window nearby to help it grow. It is one of the most resilient and easy-to-maintain plants due to its basic needs. If you want to become a true plant lover without failing, we recommend starting with a Pothos.

Avoid placing them on balconies or in gardens where they are in direct sunlight all the time, and we recommend watering them sporadically every two or three days.

Fiddle Leaf Fig:

This is strictly an indoor plant. It needs plenty of light to live and grow, especially during the cold season. During warmer weather, it can be kept outdoors, provided you place it in a spot with partial shade so the sun doesn't burn its leaves.

In spring and autumn, it should be watered every two weeks, and more frequently in summer due to the heat, as its growth is much slower.

Now that you’re an expert on plants and their care, these recommendations will help your home and spaces look on point while you do your part for the planet and add that natural, green touch to all your areas. Tell us, what other plants do you recommend we add to our spaces at Barrio Mx?

See you soon.
