A neighborhood that has it all.

Visiting it means understanding the city from the inside out.

There are neighborhoods that don't need an introduction because they have always been there, beating to their own rhythm and living a life of their own. Santa Tere is one of them. Walking through its streets is like encountering a Guadalajara that is lived without rush, with such ease—like walking on a sunny day on the shady side of the sidewalk, that relaxed.

Here in Santa Tere, daily life is built around traditional markets, long-standing diners, family businesses passed down through generations, and neighbors who know each other by name. It is a neighborhood that has it all: commerce, gastronomy, history, identity, and, above all, a vitality that has remained steadfast over the years.

Visiting it means understanding the city from the inside out. For locals, it is that reliable place they always return to—to eat, shop, wander, play tourist, or try new spots. For visitors, it is an opportunity to experience the real Guadalajara, far from the tourist traps but full of flavors, sounds, and everyday scenes that tell stories.

You don't need to go looking for experiences here; they happen on their own. But it never hurts to share a few of our recommendations so you can head out and try a bit of everything.

FONDA MARIQUITA: It is a traditional diner in the Santa Teresita Market, which has been operating since 1959. Open early from Monday to Sunday, it is a local icon for home-style cooking where the daily specials are celebrated by residents and visitors alike. You really can't leave without trying their delicious, classic fried quesadillas: crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, made with fresh masa and generously filled. If we may offer a tip, the mushroom ones are the favorites—served with cream and salsa, they are finger-licking good.

BIROTERÍA GÓMEZ: Another one of our favorite spots in the neighborhood, a local corner full of flavor and authenticity where tradition is savored in every bite. Their menu celebrates everything from classic pork rind sandwiches or various daily specials, tostadas, and chilaquiles with eggs and the best part, the real gem of the place, the chilaquiles sandwich. All served on freshly baked bread that reflects local pride, the real star is their salty birote. If you're not sure what we're talking about, it's that unique Guadalajara bread with a crispy crust and firm crumb that makes it perfect for filling with juicy stews or meat without falling apart. Plus, it's the foundation of the iconic torta ahogada and delicious sandwiches you won't find in any other city.

PASTELERÍA SANTA TERESITA: This neighborhood gem in the heart of Santa Tere, right across from the market, is known for its homemade pastries and the irresistible aroma of fresh bread that hits you from the street. Among their specialties, the corn bread stands out as a local favorite, with people lining up just to satisfy their midday cravings. Famous for its moist texture, sweetness, and authentic natural corn flavor, it’s impossible to pass up the chance to try it. If you're already there, I recommend you also try the cheese bread which combines the perfect touch of sweet and savory. Both are a must-visit to experience the traditional flavor of this area.
