Barrio Méxicois more than just a place to stay; it is a complete sensory and visual experience.
Every corner of our homes is designed to connect with the essence of Mexican architecture: from the walls, floors, planters, and kitchens to the tiles, patios, and furniture. All these small details are intended to make you feel welcome in an authentic Mexican home.
Behind every material and texture lies a story, a technique, or a cultural inspiration. That is why today we want to share some fun facts about the design and materials you will discover when staying at Barrio México.

CLAY WALLS.
If you have visited Casa Ixaya, you have surely seen our iconic clay wall with the sign for Barrio México. This clay wall, which you can also find in several of our other homes, adds warmth and pays homage to traditional construction styles from western Mexico.
Clay walls help maintain a lower temperature inside the houses, keeping them cool regardless of the time of year. This material is fired in rustic kilns at high temperatures, which gives it its characteristic reddish color and makes it highly resistant to humidity.

BLUE DOORS.
We love pops of color; we find them original, authentic, and a fun way to give our homes personality. If you have stayed at Casa Kali, you know our entrance door is that signature shade of blue.
Blue doors evoke colonial mansions, but with a modern twist thanks to the vibrant color. According to tradition, the color blue on doors is associated with protection against negative energy in some Mexican folk cultures.
You can also find this detail at Casa Blanco, where our designer was inspired by the fusion of Mexican and Mediterranean cultures to make us feel the best of both worlds.

HANDCRAFTED TILES.
From the patio wall to the kitchen, handcrafted tiles in neutral tones—such as deep green, yellow, and olive green—as well as geometric patterns, are present in many of our homes, giving soul to every space.
What we love most about this material, besides being a very Mexican detail, is knowing that it comes from traditional workshops. Its small imperfections or variations are part of its charm: proof that they are handmade and not mass-produced.

CLAY DETAILS.
Something that undoubtedly characterizes us is our skull wall. If you have stayed with us at Casa Morelos, you surely know what we are talking about.
We love this wall, so iconic to Barrio México, for many reasons. The clay skulls integrated into the walls are not just a decorative element: they are planters that bring the space to life and represent a fusion of folk art and contemporary design.
Integrating sculptures directly into some of our spaces pays homage to pre-Hispanic traditions, where architecture was a fundamental part of the culture.
And if you look closely, you'll notice we love surrounding ourselves with clay pots. They accompany, embrace, and adorn our corners with warmth and that touch of Mexican artistry that inspires us so much.

CEMENT TILE AND STONE FLOORING.
The cobblestone hallways and courtyards are reminiscent of the old streets in Mexican towns. These floors are not only resistant to the passage of time and rain, but they also allow the patios to breathe, keeping our homes cool.
Fun fact: most of our floors are made of cement tile, as we love the artisanal and original touch it provides.
Barrio México is more than just a place to stay; it’s an experience that makes you feel right at home. Every texture connects us to a part of Mexico that endures, reinvents itself, and honors our culture, transforming the everyday into art.
