Places that taste like memories.

Some places go beyond the simple act of eating; they are restaurants where every dish, aroma, and corner takes us back to another time.

We know that here at Barrio México we love getting nostalgic, and we always share that with you. This time, we’re focusing on those restaurants that transport us to different stages of our lives with just a single bite.

Some places go beyond the simple act of eating; they are restaurants where every dish, aroma, and corner takes us back to another time. These are spaces that envelop us in familiar flavors, the warmth of home-cooked meals, and the memory of long family conversations or a special meal that defined a moment.

There are restaurants that stand the test of time, evoking a powerful feeling within us: nostalgia and memories.

We’re sharing three spots in Guadalajara that will transport you to different moments in your life just by visiting them—not to mention what happens when you taste the food.

      LONCHES AMPARITO.

With over 50 years of history, these traditional lonches have become a culinary icon of Guadalajara.

Whether it’s for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, we’re always ready for a good lonche from Amparito.

Started by its founder, "Señora Amparito"—hence its well-known name—this small business began by selling only ham and cheese lonches. One of its first locations was in an area surrounded by businesses, schools, and shops, which contributed to its rapid popularity. Later on, it moved to its first and only original branch in Downtown Guadalajara.

Over the years, they have maintained their delicious flavor, surely thanks to a secret family recipe prepared with a lot of love and, above all, high-quality ingredients. The crusty birote bread, the homemade roasted pork leg, and the touch of grilled mayonnaise will transport you back to our grandparents' school recess. Today, you can also enjoy panela cheese, carnitas, pork loin, and head cheese lonches.

What are you waiting for to relive your childhood with this delicious Amparito lonche? It’s impossible to eat just one.

   FONDA DOÑA GABINA ESCOLÁSTICA.

Just walking into this place is like opening a window to the past. The aromas of freshly made stews evoke that scent reminiscent of our grandmothers' kitchens. Its flavor wraps you in a warmth that is hard to find these days: plenty of seasoning, affection, and an atmosphere where you can breathe in pure tradition.

This fonda blends the rustic with the endearing: classic wooden furniture, tableware that looks like it was inherited from grandma, and details that transport us inside Mexican homes, giving it that charm of Sunday family meals at the grandparents' house.

But what truly connects you to your memories is the food: beans cooked with lard, fluffy red rice, stuffed chiles, or broths that heal the soul like a warm hug.

This place is more than just a spot to eat; it’s an invitation to sit at the table with your memories. It’s a reunion with home cooking—the kind prepared over low heat without rushing, using recipes that don't follow a script and hands that don't rely on exact measurements. It is, quite simply, the art of cooking by intuition. A true culinary masterpiece!

    ALONSITOS IS SUPER DELICIOUS.

We know this place is brand new to the city, but it captures exactly what we were looking for. Walking in feels like opening a portal to those years when food had soul, when flavors were simple yet memorable.

It’s not just a place to eat; it’s a time capsule that takes us back to the days of childhood snacks, high school cravings, and those spontaneous outings or getaways with friends.

The smell of a freshly made dish, the soft sound of retro music, the decor, the vibe, the attention to detail in the drinks… everything is carefully designed to bring back memories. Coffee served in a glass cup, just like the old days; the chicken sandwich with crispy fries, the delicious-looking pancakes; and for chilaquiles lovers, an unmissable option.

You come here to reconnect with a little piece of yourself you might have forgotten: your adolescence. What are you waiting for? Stop by and relive that moment.

Tell us on social media what other place you’d add to this recommendation and where it transports you.

     See you soon.
